The brief: Create two boutique-hotel style 3-bedroom beach houses which present visitors with luxurious simplicity whilst also being true ‘lock up and leaves’.

The opportunity to design two new homes from an original shack on the stunning Atlantic seaboard in Cape Town came about in 2018.

Now the houses enjoy spectacular Table Mountain and ocean views, whilst being in the heart of the Beta Beach community. Jumping through planning hoops, sourcing suppliers and working with contractors on the other side of the world was an immense, but rewarding, challenge.

We minimised the colour palette and materials to create a sophisticated, pared back vibe and ensured we maximised the light and views for which Cape Town is famed. The top floor living space is convivial and practical with glazed sliding doors and balconies to the ocean and mountains. A huge skylight brings light from the roof to the ground floor through open stairwells. The centrally placed kitchen is placed centrally provides flexibility to swap the position of the Dining and Living spaces. Polished terrazzo floors in the reception areas link seamlessly to smoked oak in the bedrooms and staircases.

We had fun creating hot rolled mild steel balustrades. In the bathrooms, we opted for dark polished plaster contrasting with black or white matt wall-hung sanitary ware and brushed brass vanity units. An obsession with a good night’s sleep has seen the installation of fully upholstered luxurious super king beds which are simply dressed in white linen. For flexibility in the rental market, all rooms can work as twins or doubles with swing wall mounted bedside lights to accommodate both options. And should guests desire a cooler Cape Town break, wood burning stoves and underfloor heating provide autumn and winter warmth.
