The opportunity to design two new homes from an original shack on the stunning Atlantic seaboard in Cape Town came about in 2018, providing an immense, but rewarding, challenge. The houses, in the heart of the Beta Beach community, enjoy spectacular Table Mountain and ocean views.
To make the most of these and maximise light, we minimised the colour palette and materials for a sophisticated, pared back vibe. The top floor living space, with central kitchen, is convivial, flexible, and practical. Glazed sliding doors and balconies open onto ocean and mountains, and polished terrazzo floors link seamlessly to smoked oak in the bedrooms and staircases. A huge skylight brings light to the ground floor through open stairwells.
In the bathrooms, dark polished plaster contrasts with black or white matt wall-hung sanitary ware and brushed brass vanity units. An obsession with a good night’s sleep has seen the installation of luxurious super king beds simply dressed in white linen. For flexibility, all rooms work as twins or doubles with swing wall-mounted bedside lights. And wood burning stoves and underfloor heating provide warmth for a cool-season Cape Town break.
