As the Georgians and Victorians did not build their houses with bathrooms, installing one always presents a challenge — you either use a bedroom, which is invariably too large, or carve a section from an existing room.

Fortunately, in this house, an original dressing room was the ideal space to transform into a luxurious bathroom. Walls, ceiling and floor were all rebuilt with strengthened joists to allow the 150kg bath and wall hung sink to rest happily within the space.

A beautiful but huge sash window, which floods the room with light, and an equally large door, meant there were no corners to utilise and only 2 walls against which items could be placed.

But these constraints allowed us to create a clear central area to maximise the feeling of space in the room.

Simple modern bathroom sanitaryware in a matte finish was complemented by gunmetal fittings. Then we went to town with a highly figured Rosalina marble tile on the walls and three different tones of marble laid in a herringbone pattern on the floor.

The final flourish was to embrace the 3 metre high ceiling with a full length sheer linen and exquisite floral velvet curtain.
