In a house stripped of personality, the 1970s called. My task — the second project for existing clients — was to create something bang up to date, but with references to its mid-century roots. We first established an attractive yet functional layout for the rooms that needed it most. To create a cosy living area, we closed one wall – creating an internal window to introduce light and views – and opened another to access the kitchen. Feature colours of olive and orange and a high-gloss kitchen combined with retro-inspired furniture, and soft furnishings in a mix of textures, complemented by simple wall and window treatments.

Elsewhere, the house just needed a breath of life. We linked upstairs and downstairs with a grass cloth wallpaper – typical of the era and adding texture and interest. The staircase was painted in a warm black with contrasting washable seagrass with black binding. Bedrooms have their own personality, from luxurious blush and earth tones in the principal suite to dramatic wallpaper in others. We even fitted a small media room in the garage…
